The woman who had handed a holiday card containing $1,000 to a New York state trooper has come forward and taken back her gift, authorities said.

The woman, who has asked police to stay anonymous, then donated the money to a charity, Stewarts Holiday Match program, police said.

Authorities asked the woman to come forward after Trooper Christopher Maniscalco reported to his superiors that the woman approached him while he was responding to a complaint in Guilderland and handed him the card on December 2. She told him something to effect that "Trooper, I always see you around, doing a good job and wanted to say Merry Christmas and thank you."

The trooper thanked the woman and continued on the call. When his shift was over, he opened the card and found the money.

Under New York law, police officers are not allowed to accept cash gifts.
