Mayor Bloomberg: Obama’s priority should be guns

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says President Barack Obama's first priority in his second term should be to lead the country on gun control.

Bloomberg spoke about the issue during an interview on Sunday's "Meet the Press" on NBC. He said the type of violence from the deaths of 20 school children "only happens in America" and said these shootings happen "again and again."

Bloomberg has been an outspoken advocate for gun control for years and he said that New York State has some of the toughest gun laws in the country. He also emphasized that New York City the lowest murder rate of any big American city.

He said it's time for the president to take a stand and not go to Congress and ask what legislators want to do.

Meanwhile, two senators are calling for a national commission to examine mass shootings in the U.S.

The proposals are among the first to come from Congress in the wake of Friday's school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman told "Fox News Sunday" that a national commission could be used to scrutinize the nation's gun laws, mental health system and the role that violent video games and movies might play in shootings.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) agrees and says it's time that the nation reflects in a "thoughtful way."
