Fire forces mom to throw baby out a window

Posted: Updated:
FORT WORTH, Texas -

A Fort Worth woman threw her infant son from a second floor window to save him from a fast-moving fire.

Marena Vasquez was home alone on Friday with 4-month-old Ricardo. She smelled smoke and then realized flames and smoke were quickly tearing through her apartment building in the 5300 block of East Rosedale Street.

The young mother grabbed the baby and ran to the window, yelling to neighbors for help. Antonio Olveras, a maintenance worker, told her to wrap the baby up in a blanket and toss him out the window.

"I just, I covered him up and I just grabbed him and threw him out. I just stood there watching to make sure he grabbed him," Vasquez said.

She was able to escape as well after someone brought over a ladder.

Fire officials said the fire started in the kitchen of an apartment on the first floor. A total of 16 units were damaged and 13 people were displaced.

No one was seriously hurt in the fire.
