Police and school administrators took no chances Tuesday morning when someone thought they heard gunfire near Birdville Elementary school.
Just before 8 a.m., the campus and nearby Shannon Learning Center went into lockdown mode when someone reported gunfire in the area.
Police from Haltom City, North Richland Hills and Watauga responded quickly and sealed off traffic in the area.
A lengthy investigation revealed no shell casings, no guns, and nothing from the surrounding neighborhood.
A parent told investigators that his truck had backfired once in the parking lot and possibly led someone to believe the loud noise was something worse.
Administrators dropped the lockdown and reopened both school campuses, although many spooked parents chose to take their children home for the day.
Also on Tuesday morning, Lake Worth High School in Lake Worth ISD investigated an alleged bomb threat phoned into the school. A police search revealed no explosives on campus, and classes were held as normal.
