Detroit Yoga: Changing your mind and body

Posted: Updated:
WJBK Fox 2 -

Each class starts with: To do yoga is to still the mind.

And then you begin.

Yoga is more than just physical exercise, it offers a chance to quiet the brain in a world of information overload.

At Detroit Yoga, there is no music, no chanting, just yoga.  Just breathing.

Posted on the web site: The sound of our breathing is the music we practice to.

Play the video to hear Detroit Yoga owner Jason Schramm explain the premise of the studio and to see a demonstration of a few yoga postures.  Fox 2's Alan Longstreet joins the class and finds out quickly why you can burn up to 600 calories in less than an hour by following Schramm's teachings. It's a workout! (two videos in the player)

There two types of practices at Detroit Yoga: (from the web site)

Vinyasa, which means breathing and moving, uses the same principles and foundations as Ashtanga but the sequence is different each time (by the teacher's design), allowing the student to work on being present and calm no matter what comes their way during class.

Ashtanga, where the style of Vinyasa came from, is a several thousand-year-old sequence of postures, handed down from teacher to student.  It is always practiced in the same order, and the sequence is added onto, or built if you will, over weeks, months, and years.  The Ashtanga practice is designed to open and strengthen your body and mind, as well as enhance all systems of the body.  All Ashtanga classes at Detroit Yoga are Mysore style.

Both Vinyasa and Ashtanga offer an excellent balance of strength and flexibility.  Both strengthen your heart and increase oxygen intake, improving your health and vitality.  And with both, you will learn to discipline your mind as well as your body.
