Thieves rob elderly man of rare coins

Posted: Updated:

Four masked men robbed an elderly Oak Cliff resident of what amounts to his life savings.

The punks were in and out of Ralph Kirk's home in seconds. They knew what they came for and what Mr. Ralph had spent his life collecting.

Mr. Ralph said it happened Thursday night as he was getting ready for bed. He heard a knock at his door.

"And when I opened the door they asked me did I buy radiators, car radiators," he said.

The 74-year-old buys junk. He cleans it and sells it to big junkyards.

"And I get the profits off of the junk. That's how I make my living now. I'm retired," he said.

He said before he could do anything one man pulled out a pistol and ordered him to get down on the floor. The three other men went to the bedroom where he keeps his coin collection.

"Some of the coins, they was in little boxes about that long and about that wide. Old coins, yes sir. I been had them for years," he said.

They stole more than $5,000 worth of valuable coins. They also broke his bed frame while they were looking for the collection.

"One of them said, 'Shoot him!' He said, 'Naw, he's alright.' The other one had the gun," Mr. Ralph said.

Before the thieves left they also took his house keys and his wallet with $700 cash and his bank cards inside.

Mr. Ralph said he's endured some hard times though the years, but now he's lost his life savings and all the cash he had for Christmas.

"Anybody would know how that make me feel. They taken money from me like that," he said.

Police are hoping someone will call them with the right information. They encourage anyone who comes across someone selling old and rare coins to call the Dallas Police Department.
