HOUSTON (FOX 26) -
A Bellaire Police officer and a bystander were killed after a chase erupted in gunfire in West Houston.
On Christmas Eve morning, Cpl. Jimmie Norman was on patrol when he tried to pull over a vehicle for a routine traffic stop. The driver refused to stop and led Norman on a chase out of Bellaire.
The driver eventually stopped in a crowded business parking lot near the corner of Bellaire and Chimney Rock. From there, chaos broke out.
Houston Police Department spokesman John Cannon said the driver immediately opened fire on the officer. Norman was shot before he could get to his gun.
A local business man was also shot and killed. His identity has not been released.
The suspected shooter is believed to be Harlon Lewis, 21. He was shot and struck twice by responding officers and is in the hospital.
Crews at the scene saw more than two dozen bullet casings littering the area.
