Family of suspected shooter apologizes for deaths of officer, bystander

Posted: Updated:

Just hours after a Bellaire Police officer and a bystander were shot and killed in West Houston, the family of the suspected shooter is apologizing.

Harlem Lewis, 21, is in the hospital after he was shot and wounded by officers Monday morning, Houston Police say.

Lewis' relatives say he recently began using drugs.  They believe that is why his actions have been so out of character.

Community activist Quanell X says he personally knows Lewis.  He mentored him at a Houston mosque.

The family did not want to show their faces in fear of retaliation and because they have yet to speak to investigators.
