An 87-year-old grandfather visiting his family died on Christmas Eve when the dry decorated tree caught fire in a Plano home, according to fire officials.
About 7:20 p.m., crews were sent to 2500 Parkhaven Drive, near Custer and West Parker Roads. The caller reported the "whole home was on fire" and everyone had gotten out except the elderly man.
Crews entered the burning home to rescue the man, but he died later at the hospital. One firefighter was injured, but his burns are not thought to be life-threatening.
The victim had been visiting his son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren for Christmas, according to Plano Fire Captain Peggy Harrell.
The other family members told investigators they heard a "pop" just before the Christmas tree go up in flames.
