Garland firefighter Devon Colbert may be paralyzed after accident

GARLAND, Texas -

The Garland Firefighter's Association is trying to raise money to help one of their own.

Devon Colbert, a 29-year-old firefighter, may be paralyzed following a Rockwall car accident more than a week ago. Colbert's 2-year-old was also in the vehicle, but thankfully was not injured.

Colbert also has another young child. His wife stays home to care for the babies. But since he has been with the fire department for only 14 months, Colbert may not have accrued enough sick leave to pay for the therapy -- and time off -- he needs.

Police reports indicate the accident happened as Colbert was driving west on Highway 66 in Rockwall. The other driver was going north on John King Boulevard. That other driver says he thought the coast was clear, but when he advanced forward, he struck Colbert's car in the back driver's side panel.

Colbert's car flipped into a ditch. The impact severely injured his spine.

So far, his fellow firefighters at Station 7 have been covering his shift, but they want to do more. They set up a PayPal account to help with Colbert's medical bills.
