Police: Off-duty sheriff's deputy shoots bank robber

Posted: Updated:

Police in DeKalb County say an off-duty sheriff's deputy shot a suspected bank robber on Friday. It happened inside the Capitol City Bank on Memorial Drive in Stone Mountain, and the off-duty deputy just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Investigators say the deputy, dressed in plain clothes, was in line at the bank doing personal business when he realized a man in front of him was robbing the bank.  They say the deputy saw the alleged robber was armed, identified himself as a deputy, and ordered the man to put down the weapon. But the suspect did not comply.

Authorities say the deputy felt like his life and the lives of others inside were in danger, so he shot the robber. The robber tried to run, kicking out a window at the bank in his attempt to flee.  He later collapsed near some bushes, and was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

The suspect was identified by police as 30-year-old Eric Roberts.  Investigators say they are looking into the possibility that Roberts may be responsible for other bank robberies in the area.  They also say he had been in the DeKalb County Jail on obstruction charges as of December 11, and he was arrested in October for failure to appear.  In May, police say Roberts was arrested on a loitering charge.

The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the results of an investigation.  His name has not been released.
