Authorities: Man tried to kidnap wife at NJ mall

Posted: Updated:

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - Numerous charges have been filed against a man who allegedly tried to kidnap his wife at a New Jersey mall.

Freehold Township police tell the Asbury Park Press that Jess Blechman's wife had a restraining order against the 44-year-old Middletown man, but she agreed to meet him at the mall around 9 p.m. Friday.

The couple was walking to Blechman's car when he allegedly grabbed his wife and handcuffed 1 of her wrists. Blechman managed to get his wife in the car, but she broke free before he could cuff her other wrist.

Blechman drove off but was later arrested at his home on several charges, including aggravated assault and attempted kidnapping. He was being held on $237,500 bail, and it wasn't known if he has retained an attorney.
