NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

New Year's Eve is fast approaching and the universal symbol of the coming year is prepared for the big night.

Sunday afternoon workers tested the famous ball in Times Square. 2013 marks the 13th consecutive year Philips has served as the official lighting partner of the iconic Times Square Ball.

The ball is covered with 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles and it weights almost 11,900 pounds.

The very first ball drop in Times Square took place on December 31, 1907.
