A former Newton County deputy killed by a policewoman in Afghanistan was honored on Monday. A procession of police cars and motorcycles accompanied the casket of Joe Griffin from the airport to Covington.
Griffin's employer, DynCorp International, a NATO contractor, the 49-year-old man shot and killed on Christmas Eve by a policewoman in Kabul, Afghanistan. Griffin was in the country training and mentoring members of the Afghan National Police.
Griffin had served at the Newton County Sheriff's Department on two separate times, first in the late 1990s and then again in 2007. He left each time to train new officers in other countries, a dangerous but rewarding calling for the husband and father.
"Great guy and a person that liked to travel. He liked to try to do good in the world and he made a lifetime of doing that," said Scott Bentley, Griffin's uncle.
The funeral for Joe Griffin will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Wheeler's Funeral Home in Covington.
