Dallas to tear down Lee Harvey Oswald's apartment

DALLAS (AP) - The city of Dallas says it will demolish an apartment complex where Lee Harvey Oswald briefly lived before the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

A city attorney wrote Monday in a letter to the property's owner that the building at 600 Elsbeth in Oak Cliff will be torn down after asbestos testing. The letter says demolition will begin immediately after the testing, though a date has not been set.

The city won a court order in May requiring Jane Bryant to tear down the uninhabited 10-unit, two-story apartment complex built in 1925. However, the city says Bryant failed to act in the allotted time and that allowed the structure to become a "nuisance."

Lee Harvey and Marina Oswald lived in the building from November 1962 until March 1963.

JFK was slain on Nov. 22, 1963.
