UFT denounces mayor's comparison to NRA

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Officials with the teachers union along with some council members stood on the steps of City Hall Monday to demanding the mayor apologize for remarks he made Friday on his weekly radio show.

The mayor compared the leadership of the UFT to the leadership of the NRA by saying they are both out of touch with what their members really want.

The union said the mayor is being insensitive in light of the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut.

But Mayor Mike Bloomberg said he feels the union is just trying to create a distraction. He said the real issue the union should be focused on is reaching a deal with the city on a new system to evaluate teachers.

The deadline is looming. If the city and the teacher's union don't agree on a new system by January 17, 2013, the city stands to lose $450 million in state aid and grants.

The mayor said he wants an evaluation system that will keep the best teachers in the classroom.
