In recent weeks thieves have stolen dozens of tailgates off pickup trucks across Dallas – Fort Worth.
Police said in the last two weeks there have been more than 20 tailgate thefts in Euless alone. Irving, Fort Worth and other mid cities have seen similar crimes.
Lt. E.J. Starnes said it only takes a pair of criminals maybe 30 seconds to pop out a tailgate. They can sell even older models for a couple hundred dollars.
But for victims, getting a tailgate replaced through a dealer is much more expensive.
"It's costing me and my insurance company about $1,600," said Robert Wright, whose tailgate was taken out of his driveway two days before Christmas.
Lt. Starnes encourages people to etch a driver's license number or some other form of identification on their tailgate so that if it's stolen police have a way of identifying the true owner.
He said most new pickups have locks on the tailgate. There are also cheap and easy lock kits for older models. He reminded people to use them.
