In all my years, I have yet to cover a cat up a tree, so the first thing I did was stand at the bottom of the 35 foot palm tree and say here kitty, kitty, kitty -- something the owners had been doing no doubt -- nothing. So it was time to call in the professionals.
You can call him the cat whisperer or the cat rescuer, or the Indiana Jones of the Feline World.
"I'm a certified aerial rescue technician which means I'm trained to rescue other arborists or people who have gone aloft and gotten themselves into situations where they can't get down and we've incorporated that technique to get cats down," said Jesse Huffman of Arborvision Tree Service.
"Cats are crazy I don't know why they climb up that high thinking oh I'll be fine --- not really," said Hillary Jacobs.
Jacobs heard Dakota, the family cat, calling for help Tuesday night and discovered him stuck in the palm tree about 65 feet up.
"He probably wanted to get a bird or something..once he starts going up there, he doesn't stop he'll just keep going. It's easier to get up than it is to get down," said Jacobs.
After getting safety lines and harnesses in place, which took about 40 minutes, Huffman scaled the tree and came face to face with Dakota.
"Basically just like with a person, you want to let them know that you're trained and they have nothing to worry about and that you're going to get them down," he said.
It worked. Huffman grabbed Dakota and put him in a bag. He says this is the trickiest part of the operation.
Once in the bag, it was a quick trip to the ground and a happy reunion.
When Huffman went up the tree, he had a Go Pro camera and we could see the rescue up close and personal. It looks pretty hairy from his perspective, but you can see why experience is so important here -- he was 65 feet off the ground.
This was a particularly complex rescue that cost right about $200. Owners will tell you it's worth it.
