A woman was found dead in her Grand Prairie apartment around 3:30 Sunday morning.
Police say she was a very dependable employee and a co-worker became suspicious when she didn't show up for work.
"It was not like her to not show up to work without notifying someone and that was the first red flag that went up. After she had gotten off work, that's when she decided to go check on her just to make sure everything was okay," says Det. Lyle Gensler of the Grand Prairie Police Department.
The co-worker found the women's body in her unit at the Claiborne Apartments and called 911. Police say they too saw red flags and began a homicide investigation.
The woman's 13-month old son, who lives with her, wasn't in the apartment, but police later located the child with his father in Arlington, who they've questioned.
"He's not a suspect right now. He's cooperating with us and so far not a suspect yet," says Det. Gensler.
Police say so far there are no leads on any suspects, but they do not believe it was random.
"We don't think there is a mass killer out there that's going to strike again. We think this female was targeted. We're just not sure why she was targeted at this point."
Police are not releasing the cause of death or the woman's name until her family has been notified.
This is Grand Prairie's first homicide of the year. The city had one all of last year.
