Many people who have insurance have not been able to find a flu shot for their children. But, help is now available in Dallas County.
The county said it has 1,000 doses of the children's flu vaccine that will be available for free exclusively for children whose parents have insurance.
The law prohibits any federally funded vaccinations distributed by a public health department from going to people who can pay or have private insurance. But the county was able to get supplies from the state so all children can be protected.
"They're being penalized for having insurance. They would go to their doctor's office. The doctor would say we are out of the children's flu vaccine go to the county health department. Well, with that policy we couldn't utilize the vaccine for children's programs for private insured patients. So we thank the state for providing 1,000 doses. We hope that'll fill the gaps," Zach Thompson, director of the health department.
Thompson said if it's not enough, he will go back to the state and seek more.
