PHOENIX -
An Arizona attorney has collected 119,000 signatures on an online petition for what she says are sensible gun laws.
"The Justice Department study that looked at the effect of the 1994 ban on assault weapons concluded that there was a correlation between how lethal an attack was and the type of weapon involved. We know for instance, in the Tucson shooting that Jared Loughner was wrestled to the ground when he went to reload," said Ellen Davis.
State Senator Lori Klein weighs in on the President's gun control plan:
"Basically, it's not responsible gun owners who perpetuate violence, it's the mentally ill and in this case the only common denominator is gun-free zones with mentally ill, so we have the mental health problem we have to address, but it's not a basis to infringe upon responsible gun owners in this country."
Background checks: "We already have background checks. Universal means they just want to cover that one percent of the individuals at gun shows that sell between each other privately. Right now at gun shows, 99 percent of the guns sold are sold by dealers, so they are background checked."
Gun trafficking: "How can we talk about gun trafficking when our own government sent guns down to Mexico which killed 300 people and one of our agents? So gun trafficking is amongst criminals and obviously, that's the role of the FBI and other outlets to take care of."
Ban on military-style assault weapons: "We've been there are done that and it had no delible impact on criminals getting assault weapons..basically you're going to penalize the very small population that has assault weapons..most of them are former military that are reliving their glory days and they keep these weapons. We don't want these weapons getting in the wrong hands, but that's just due diligence amongst those that do happen to have them. I do not see a ban on assault weapons as creating safety. There's already so many out there. There's no way that they can monitor it."
Ban on high-capacity magazines: "It's a joke. Because if someone is bent on creating mayhem or destruction, they're going to take three or four clips with 10 bullets in them and change them out. The problem is perpetrators and their weapons of choice. The weapons of choice when somebody wants to do mayhem can be a knife, a bomb, it could be anything..so to go after guns..this is a political ploy by this government..he's giving a bone to the anti-gun lobby and unfortunately, it's infringing on our 2nd Amendment rights. How would you like it if he created executive orders against the 1st Amendment because he didn't like how you were reporting his administration. This is a slippery slope when it comes to freedom."
Klein adds, "I highly doubt that looking at anything other than the mental health issues that we're facing with young kids..obviously, they are easily identifiable. We need to deal with those things. We have a culture of violence that we need to look at, but don't punish people who are law abiding gun owners."
So what are other people saying?
Tom Buohl, gun owner: "I think it's ludicrous. Banning weapons will only take it away from legal people."
Aaron Enling, Olsen Firearms Manager: "All they're doing is making it harder for law abiding citizens to defend themselves."
Davis adds, "I respect the right to own a gun...I don't think you need an assault weapon in public."
Both sides are very passionate about their decision on gun control. Here's what the NRA had to say about the President's plan in a statement released on Wednesday:
"Attacking firearms and ignoring children is not a solution to the crisis we face as a nation. Only honest, law abiding gun owners will be affected and our children will remain vulnerable to the inevitability of more tragedy."
