CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Thursday is a very special day for some students in northwest Indiana. They will be boarding a plane at O'Hare and heading to Washington for President Obama's second inauguration.
When these lucky kids land in our nation's capital, they will be treated like VIP dignitaries. It will be a trip the high school seniors from Gary will never forget.
Seven students won a week-long trip to Washington, designed to give them a chance to study government up close. The essay contest was sponsored by the Barden Gary Foundation. The youngsters wrote about a community service project they will put into action in the spring.
"My essay was called ‘Uniformity.' It was about donating uniform clothes to other students who cannot afford new uniform clothes," one winner said. "If you can have a good appearance, it makes you feel better in school and it helps you focus better in school."
"My topic was getting kids involved in karate to restore discipline and respect that Gary needs from our youth," another winner said.
In addition to attending the inauguration, the students will get a week to meet lawmakers and see the democratic process at work.
FOX 32 News is your station for coverage of President Obama's second inauguration.
Look for live reports from Good Day Chicago anchor Dawn Hasbrouck and FOX 32 political editor Mike Flannery in Washington, beginning Sunday night.
They'll both be live on Monday morning, from the U.S. Capitol.
