A Chicago alderman wants to ban the sale of energy drinks in the city. Ald. Ed Burke said drinks like Red Bull, Monster and Five Hour Energy are dangerous for teens and young adults.
The ordinance Burke proposes calls for a $100-$500 fine for each offense. Burke not only wants to ban their sale in Chicago, but their distribution as well.
Industry tracker Beverage Digest indicates energy drinks sales grew 17% in 2011, the latest year such statistics are available.
A federal survey, released this month, indicates that from 2007 to 2011 the number of emergency room visits involving energy drinks rose from about 10,000 to more than 20,000.
The FDA recently published an article claiming that at least 5 deaths since 2009 can be attributed to Monster Energy Drink.
Beverage manufacturers say the statistics are misleading and taken out of context.
