Students are being warned after an incident near UIC's Near West Side campus following an incident on Wednesday night in which a student had her iPhone taken by a man who said he had a gun.
The student was almost to the front door of her apartment in the 1400 block of West Lexington Street about 6:25 p.m., when she was approached by two men, an alert from the University of Illinois at Chicago said.
One of the men asked her for the time and suggested she check her cell phone, the alert said. He then told her he had a gun, reached into her pocket and took her iPhone. The men then ran southbound on Laflin Street. The student was not injured.
The robbers were described as black men, 18 to 22, one about 5-foot-10 to 6-feet tall,= with a thin build, dark complexion and short black hair, wearing a black college varsity jacket with red and white lettering and stripes, and blue jeans.
UIC Police strongly recommend complying with an armed offender whose intent appears to be property or valuables, as the victim did in this case.
The UIC Police/Chicago Police Joint Robbery Task Force and Area Central detectives are investigating. Anyone with information should call (312) 996-2830.
