Gov. Cuomo repeats call to end gun violence

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Governor Andrew Cuomo gave a passionate speech against gun violence Saturday afternoon in Harlem.

"It has to stop, and it's time to act and that's the government's responsibility to stand up and do something that protects the people in society, and not tell it why it can't be done but figure out how to get it done," said Cuomo.

The governor made his remarks at a meeting of the National Action Network.

Earlier in the week, Cuomo signed the toughest gun control law in the nation and the first to be passed following the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

Cuomo says the crackdown had to be quickly passed signed into law to stop the run on assault weapons and ammunition.

In his weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama asked the public to urge their members of Congress to support new gun laws.
