Helicopter makes rough landing in Mesa yard

MESA, Ariz. -

The pilot of a small experimental helicopter is okay after making an emergency landing in a Mesa neighborhood Tuesday afternoon, near Stapley and University.

Pilot Joe Goetz, a man in his 60s, was in control when he landed, and walked away from the crash

The man was the only one inside the single-seat 2007 Helicycle and he made it out of the aircraft before Mesa firefighters arrived at the scene.

Firefighters say the pilot did a great job of avoiding homes, power lines, and vehicles in the area, and landed in a bush next to a sidewalk. The helicopter is pretty much intact, and nothing caught on fire.

No one on the ground was hurt, and the crash was witnessed by many people.

"I thought he was dead," said neighbor Victor Allinger Jr. "I thought geez, I hope you don't crash into a house, or I hope you don't hit people walking down the street, but he made it, he's a hell of a pilot."

Goetz was reportedly flying from Chandler to Falcon Field. It's unknown what caused his aircraft to go down.

After the crash, the pilot disassembled the homemade helicopter so it could be removed from the sidewalk.

Pilot Joe Goetz says the Helicycle will be retired and he probably won't build another one.

"Unfortunate situation.. we built it right.. it's going to be retired. I remember it well, I remember watching out for people around," he says.
