A University Park United Methodist Church youth volunteer is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with an underage girl he met at the church.
Police said 25-year-old James Truman Ackley got involved with the girl in August.
"The victim was on some type of church retreat up at Possum Kingdom Lake and the suspect was a chaperone," said Capt. Leon Holman with University Park police.
The two allegedly engaged in sexual acts in the church parking lot and frequently exchanged sexually explicit text messages.
The girl's father found out about the relationship earlier this year after confronting her about receiving texts at all hours of the night. Police said while they were discussing it, an explicit photo from Ackley appeared on her cellphone screen.
Ackley was charged with indecency with a child and the online solicitation of a minor. He is now free on bond.
"I hope this is the only victim. No one else has come forth. He has no criminal record that we know of," Capt. Holman said.
University Park United Methodist Church has been cooperating with police. It said it does check the backgrounds of all volunteers who work with children. They are also required to attend training.
"We will also continue to take action to protect the children and youth of our church family by providing them with a safe and secure environment," the church said in a statement.
