Freezing rain possible for Friday

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Will ice impact your day on Friday?  That depends greatly on where you live.  The FOX 5 Storm Team is tracking cold temps and moisture headed our way, and it could bring freezing rain and sleet to some parts of north Georgia.

FOX 5 Storm Team meteorologist Joanne Feldman says cloudy and cold conditions are in place early Friday morning with very dry air at the surface.  Because of the dry air, initially any precipitation will evaporate before reaching the ground. This should leave most of the morning commute free of any significant icing.

Feldman says the bigger threat for ice accumulation will be the northeast Georgia mountains and areas east of Jasper and Gainesville. Accumulations should average around 1/10".

Motorists are urged to exercise caution when driving, especially near overpasses and bridges.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for 10 counties in northeast Georgia including Fannin, Gilmer and Hall Counties.  The warning is in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday.  A Winter Storm Watch in effect for numerous counties in north Georgia, including Bartow, Chattooga, Cherokee, Forsyth, Habersham, and Union. The watch is in effect from late Thursday night into Friday evening.

A Freezing Rain Advisory was also issued for dozens of counties, including metro Atlanta.  That advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.

Here's a timeline of how the winter weather is expected to impact our area on Friday:

Friday 6-9am – Cloudy and cold conditions are in place early this morning with very dry air at the surface.  Because of the dry air, initially any precipitation will evaporate before reaching the ground.  This should leave most of the morning commute free of any significant icing.  A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for mainly the northeast Georgia mountains and areas northeast of Jasper and Gainesville.  Ultimately, these areas will see a bigger ice threat than metro Atlanta.  Ice accumulations in the Winter Storm Warning area should average no more than 1/10".

Friday 9am-Noon – Precipitation will start across the northernmost counties of the state (mainly Fannin, Gilmer, Union, Towns, and Rabun counties).  This could start as a little bit of sleet before changing over to a cold rain or some patchy freezing rain for spots.  South of that, including the heart of the metro, the precip may not be starting just yet.  Our computer forecast models this morning are holding off most of the precipitation in Atlanta and southward until the afternoon when temperatures would be above freezing.  Even so, for late morning, be aware that any precipitation that is falling may freeze on elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses.  Isolated slick spots are possible from Atlanta through the northern suburbs.

Friday Noon – Showers beginning for most of the metro area.  Keep in mind, amounts will be light.  For most of the metro the freezing rain threat will be very brief if at all and could kick off a few icy spots on roadways.  However, these spots should be few and far between for the metro and more likely confined to north and northeast Georgia.

Friday 3-6pm – Any precipitation in the metro Atlanta area would simply be rain.  Some freezing precipitation still possible in extreme northeast parts of the state.  Areas south of I-20 are unlikely to even see much measurable rain – and frozen precipitation looks very unlikely in these areas at any time today due to warmer temperatures.

Friday Evening – The slower arrival of precipitation with this system means most of the light rain for Atlanta may not happen until early evening when temperatures would support only rain.  Any rain will be tapering off and moving out by 10-11pm.
