Suspect in 'brutal' attack on ex goes on trial

DALLAS -

A 34-year-old Dallas man accused of beating, cutting, sodomizing, and choking his ex-girlfriend nearly to death went on trial Wednesday.

Prosecutors say Jose Arreola's alleged attack against former girlfriend Maria Escamilla is the "most brutal" case of domestic violence they've ever seen in which the victim survived.

"Escamilla's lips and skin were detached from her face, the nipples on her breasts were cut, and the defendant shoved large objects into the openings of her genital area," said Dallas County District Attorney spokesperson Debbie Denmon in an email to FOX 4. "She had to have more than 500 stitches and lost four litres of blood."

The attack happened in March 2011, when Arreola was out of jail on bond awaiting trial. Records show Arreola's bond was lowered from $750,000 to $225,000.

Arreola also faces four previous charges for acts against Escamilla, including robbery and assault.
