A mother walking with her children witnessed the unthinkable on Thursday evening: she saw a car strike her 6-year-old son, then drive away.
John Paul Raidy was rushed to Arlington Memorial Hospital, where he died.
Raidy was walking with his mother while she pushed a stroller with her younger daughter in it. The children's step-grandmother told FOX 4 that the boy was slightly ahead of his mother and sister as the family was crossed North Carrier Parkway near Crosswinds High School.
According to police, a dark-colored, small-model SUV ran the red light and struck the child in the crosswalk. The vehicle stopped briefly, then continued driving south on Carrier Parkway, according to police. The step-grandmother says the driver honked at her family.
The boy's step-grandmother said she is outraged that someone could hurt a child and just drive away. The mother, father and boy's sister are staying with friends, because the intersection where the accident happened is across the street from their home and they say it's "too painful" to face right now.
Grand Prairie police are asking anyone with information to call them. They say the SUV most likely has front end damage.
