The owner of the Gristedes supermarket chain has thrown his hat into the ring for mayor of New York City.

"I think all successful Americans should give back.. to our communities, states and volunteer to do a good job. I volunteered yesterday to be mayor. I don't need more money. We want to make sure our kids, our grand kids are going to be ok," said Catsimatidis.

The native of Greece grew up on 135th Street in upper Manhattan. Catsimatidis' father worked six days a week as a bus boy.

He is running as a Republican.

"I am pro-business. I cannot run as a Democrat because the Democrats don't let business people run on their line. I want to run as a pro-business Democrat," said Catsimatidis.

Forbes lists Catsimatidis' net worth at approximately $2B.

"When I was a senior we opened up our first store. I owned ten stores by the time I was 24. I put $5M into real estate in 1977, I blinked my eyes and it was 1980 and it was worth $100M. I believed in New York and I invested in New York and that's how you make a difference."
