NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Consider your options and take cover or hide, according to a video from the Department of Homeland Security on ways to deal with an active shooter in the workplace.

When all else fails, grab a pair of scissors and try to overtake the gunman.

These are only some of the tips in the instructional video posted on the DHS website weeks after the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

"An active shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in an occupied structure or outside in a populated area... active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly," says the DHS.

The video was reportedly in production prior to the Dec. 14 shooting in Newtown, Conn.

More advice from the DHS includes being prepared for a mass shooting at work by identifying escape routes and having a plan in mind.

If a shooting is taking place, the first step is to determine the best course of action-- to evacuate or to hide.
