Southfield officer: What drivers should do in a white out

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

What should you do if you run into a white out while driving?  We talked to a Southfield police officer about your safest moves.

"They should slow down gradually and drive at a speed that suits the conditions," said Lieutenant Nick Loussia.  "They should also increase their following distance.  You're going to need extra space to brake safely.  Also you should be patient, stay alert.  You should look as far ahead as possible, and make sure your headlights are on."

"What you should not do is... stop on the travel portion of the roadway.  You could cause chain reaction collision," he added.

In some cases maybe you should avoid the highway when the conditions are not right.  Surface streets may be safer.

The Fox 2 Weather Authority is keeping track of the latest conditions online.  You can check live radar before you head out the door.
