A Dallas jury found Nickey Van Exel guilty of the murder of Bradley Eyo in December 2010.
It took the jury about 2 and half hours to reach the verdict.
Nickey Van Exel, son of former Dallas Mavericks player Nick Van Exel, did not take the stand.
Van Exel shot Eyo with a 12-gauge shot gun in his Garland home, put the body in garbage bags, and dumped it in Lake Ray Hubbard.
It was a lesser charge than the prosecutors were hoping for. They were asking for capital murder because they argued the killing was in retribution that Nickey Van Exel and victim Bradley Eyo was going to turn him in, in connection with aggravated robberies in Houston.
Murder is the second most serious charge the jury could have come back with.
Punishment phase will begin tomorrow in the Frank Crowley Courts Building.
