Illegal guns were removed from the streets of Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon.
Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes in conjunction with the NYPD, NYC Councilwoman Letitia James and Rev. Dr. Mark V.C. Taylor held a gun buyback at Church of the Open Door in the Boerum Hill section.
The initiative offered $200 bank cards to anyone who surrendered a working handgun or assault rifle, no questions asked. Anyone who turned in weapons received a $200 bank card for operable handguns and assault rifles and a $20 bank card for operable rifles and shotguns.
Guns must be placed in a plastic or paper bag or a box. If transporting the gun by car, the gun must be transported in the trunk of the car.
Rev. Taylor says the program is especially important now as the country debates national gun laws.
Officials say 113 guns were turned in Saturday. 56 revolvers, 34 semi-automatic pistols and three shotguns were recovered, along with BB guns and eight rifles. One of the pistols contained a high-capacity magazine.
The program was launched in Brooklyn in July 2008 and there have been more than 8,100 firearms recovered.
