A Morgan County family who has been at odds with a local funeral home owner is finally at peace. The family contacted FOX 5 about a dispute over a loved one's headstone, and at last, they've seen action.
Jestine Salter turned to FOX 5 in late January, nearly two years after burying her father in a Morgan County cemetery. Bennie Lee Clark's grave bears no headstone, but it will soon.
Clark's family claims that Rockdale County funeral home owner George Levett placed Mr. Clark's name on the wrong side of the double headstone his family purchased after his death in 2011. Levett insisted the headstone was engraved exactly like the family ordered, and refused to replace it. Instead, he offered to dig up Clark's remains and move them to the other side of the headstone bearing his name.
Nearly two years after her father's death with both sides at an impasse, Salter filed suit and called FOX 5. About a week after our story on the situation aired, Salter says other members of the Levett family who aren't affiliated with the Conyers business contacted her. She says they were very apologetic.
Salter says the family members offered to give her a new headstone, reimburse her for the money spent on the original gravestone, and pay for her attorney's fees and court costs. She says she is very thankful for their help.
Salter told FOX 5 the situation was never about the money, and that the family didn't want anyone else to suffer as they had. They're grateful to everyone who had a hand in resolving the matter.
