Mom indicted for toilet paper vandalism

Posted: Updated:

The Colleyville mother accused of leading a group of teenagers to toilet paper and vandalized a neighbor's house has been indicted.

Tara Mauney appeared in court Thursday on the criminal mischief charge.

Her attorney said she was not there when the teenagers used permanent marker to write on the neighbor's exterior walls, left raw chicken parts in the mailbox and wrote profane messages on the sidewalks.

But surveillance video does show Mauney purchasing a large package of toilet paper on the evening of the incident.

"That's not against the law. Wrapping someone's home with toilet paper is not criminal mischief. The question is did she write on someone's home and that's off the wall," said Warren St. John, her attorney.

The vandalism caused an estimated $6,000 worth of damage.

The criminal mischief charge is a state jail felony punishable by up to two years in jail.

No children were charged, although police said at least two boys did admit to their involvement in the crime.
