Officer John Bell released from hospital

Posted: Updated:

The Fort Worth police officer who was shot at an auto repair shop in Haltom City was released from the hospital Thursday.

Motorcycle Officer Johnny Bell was with two other uniformed Fort Worth officers at the auto repair shop on Carson Street and Highway 121 on Jan. 29 when a suspect that Haltom City police were chasing came by.

Police said 32-year-old Cody Loron abandoned his car and ran toward the building. He exchanged gunfire with the officers and was ultimately killed.

Bell was shot in the hip, hand and eye. He has been hospitalized since the incident.

Doctors said the bullet that hit his eye was just centimeters away from his brain and the one that hit his groin nearly struck an artery in his hip. Both could have killed him.

He lost a finger on his left hand, still can't see out of his right eye and has months of rehabilitation ahead of him.

He's not sure if he'll be able to return to his motorcycle unit, but believes he's still on Earth for a reason.

"The good Lord was looking out for me. Maybe he's got a plan for me somewhere down the road," he said.

Fellow motorcycle officers lined up outside the hospital Thursday as Bell was released.

Family members said the department and the community have been extremely supportive during the recovery process.

"It is both humbling and comforting to experience the sense of family from the many officers throughout the area, the excellent medical staff, as well as the business and citizens of this great city," they said in a statement.
