An 18-month-old boy was airlifted to the hospital Thursday afternoon after he was found face down floating in a backyard pool.
It happened just after noon in the 12500 block of W. Larkspur Road in El Mirage.
It's not clear how long he was in the water. The boy's grandma says she took her eyes off him for about 5 minutes to attend to a 12-year-old sibling with autism.
She attempted lifesaving efforts and firefighters took over when they arrived. They were able to establish a pulse.
The toddler started breathing on his own, and by the time crews tried to intubate him, he had a gag reflex -- which is a good sign. His color had also improved a little by the time he was transported.
"There was a pulse and he was spitting up some water, that is a good sign, there is some positive there, but it doesn't mean he's out of the woods," said El Mirage Police Detective Kim Walden.
The toddler was airlifted to Phoenix Children's Hospital and the latest on his condition is not known.
There was no barrier around the pool.
