FOX News Poll: President faces a deeply divided country

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

The President faces a rather complicated picture.  On the one hand, take an issue like that war on terror.  Our new FOX News poll puts his approval number at 59 percent, but domestic issues are a different story -- and when it comes to the deficit, the number plummets to just 33 percent.

As the President braces for yet another walk down the Congressional aisle, he's no doubt aware of the challenges he faces.

For starters, his overall approval number, while it's improved a bit, is still just below that critical 50 percent threshold among registered voters at 49 percent.  Almost as many disapprove.

The good news for the White House -- Congress as a whole fares much worse -- a dismal 17 percent approval rating.  That's likely why the President felt emboldened when he spoke to fellow Democrats Thursday about taking on Republicans to push for another round of tax hikes.

"And I have to tell you, if that's an argument that they want to have before the court of public opinion, that is an argument I'm more than willing to engage in," he said.

But he'll have to tread carefully.  Despite his assurances otherwise, voters think the middle class is in his cross hairs.

Will taxes go up for middle income earners this year? Almost 70 percent say yes.

"The American people will not accept another tax increase to put off a spending cut the two parties have already agreed to," said Sen. Mitch McConnell.

And the President's assertion that the country doesn't have a spending problem?  83 percent of voters disagree.

But there is also a certain amount of overall optimism out there.

What about achieving the American dream?  65 percent say it's still possible.
