Police are investigating the mysterious death of a man who was rescued from a fire.
Neighbors in the 5100 block of Bryan Street smelled smoke and heard someone calling for help inside his apartment around 2 a.m. Friday. They went into the apartment and saw a mattress was on fire. The man who lives in there was standing next to the bed.
His neighbors told him to get out of the room while they put out the fire. The man, who is believed to be in his 60s, walked away, sat in a chair and then died.
Firefighters do not know what caused the fire, but they believe it was an accident. Neighbors said the man enjoyed cigars and they had seen him smoking earlier that night.
The victim was described by neighbors as a retired truck driver and Hurricane Katrina survivor.
The medical examiner is investigating the case.
