The murders of decorated Navy Seal Chris Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield have friends in their hometown of Midlothian looking for an appropriate way to remember them. They'd like to have the new high school there named after both. There's a petition circulating on Facebook.
"It brings tears to my eyes when I think about what happened to those two young men," said Margie Williams. "I think it would be a good idea to name the school after them."
Kyle, America's most decorated sniper, and Littlefield went to the same church and had a lot of friends in the small city south of Dallas. After surviving four tours of combat, Kyle came home to Midlothian, dedicating his life to helping other veterans adjust to civilian life, often bringing them to a familiar place - the shooting range.
Last Saturday, police said Kyle and Littlefield were doing just that when another young man who grew up in Midlothian, Eddie Ray Routh, shot and killed them. Routh is now being held in the Erath County jail on murder charges.
William Vanlaningham is among those who would like to see children and grandchildren graduate from a school named after Kyle and Littlefield.
"I think it's a great tribute. I can't think of a better choice," he said.
Midlothian ISD was already working on a project to come up with a name for the new school. By Sunday afternoon, there were 1,100 signatures on the petition.
