Brookhaven town supervisor on vacation during blizzard

Posted: Updated:

Ed Romaine, the town supervisor of Brookhaven, Long Island, is taking heat for being on vacation with his wife in Jamaica during the Blizzard of 2013 and its aftermath.

Brookhaven is one of the most populous townships in New York. The response by the town during the storm was disappointing, according to many residents. Others are even angrier saying Brookhaven failed its people.

Snow remains piled up in many locations across the Suffolk County town.

"People have been asking where in the world is Ed Romaine? Most of the half a million people in the town of Brookhaven have been wondering that for the last four days. They're starting to call him 'Caribbean Ed," said Councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld.

But the deputy town supervisor has come to the defense of Romaine saying he's not the problem.

"The situation has been remedied and the fault lies with the person who is going to tender his resignation today and that's the acting highway superintendent. In this town we don't have a department of public works," said Deputy Town Supervisor Daniel Panico.

A toothache reportedly kept Acting Highway Superintendent Michael Murphy out of work.

"Unfortunately, a colleague of ours has tried to make political bones out of the fact the  supervisor was not here and who had a pre-planned few days off with his wife. Ed Romanine's record of public service is stellar if not legendary. We marshaled all the resources in here," Panico.

Romaine was expected back on the job as early as Wednesay. He has reportedly scheduled a news conference for Thursday.
