Slain Deputy Jeremiah MacKay 'A Real Gentleman'

Posted: Updated:

A funeral service was held this morning for San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputy Jeremiah MacKay, who was killed during a shootout in Big Bear with fired LAPD officer-turned fugitive Christopher Dorner last week.

Thousands of people, including many members of law enforcement from other states, were in attendance at the San Manuel Amphitheater in Devore to pay their respects. The funeral was open to the public.

I met him at a fundraiser for fallen officers. That's how he would spend his time: volunteering to play bag pipes at events helping families of fallen fellow officers, as a member of the Inland Empire Emerald Society.

Now, it's his wife and four-month-old baby that will need the help. Mackay, the officer shot to death at the Dorner shootout as some are calling it, had been part of the search for former LAPD officer Christopher Dorner.

The 14-year veteran worked out of Twin Peaks, a local boy who knew the area. Hours before the shooting, he posted a Facebook message telling friends he "was up there." The response from fellow officers: "Watch your six," Referring to the blind spot behind him.

As family allows, we will share a lot more about him. I can tell you this from my little experience with him, he was a gentleman, a cop's cop, and a kind human being, who will be missed by many. It's our loss.

On the weekend before he died, Mackay volunteered to work the weekend during the search for a dangerous suspect in Big Bear.

"He knew the area and wanted this guy caught" said a fellow deputy. On Monday, his wife Lynnette asked him to stay home and spend time with the family. The hands-on dad (yes, he changed diapers for his little boy, and had just taught his stepdaughter how to ride a bike) spent the day with the kids loving every minute if it.

As a matter of fact, he'd bragged to Lynnette on Monday night that the little red headed marvel of theirs had actually "punched" one of the teddy bears! Not just any punch either, it had "follow through."

The next day, he was killed in the gun battle. Today was his last radio call on duty. His family wants us to know, they will miss him forever.
