Coconino Community ready to close Williams campus

Updated:

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - Falling enrollment and rising maintenance costs will likely mean the closure of Coconino Community College's campus in Williams.

The school's governing board will decide at its Feb. 26 meeting whether to turn the satellite campus over to the Williams Unified School District.

The building is next to Williams High School.

Coconino Community president Leah Bornstein says the school needs every penny focused on instruction and can't afford to maintain a building without enrolled students.

State funding for community colleges went from about 44% of Coconino Community's general operating budget in 1999 to 11% in 2011.

The Arizona Daily Sun says the cost for maintaining the building in Williams is about $40,000 a year.
