Hockey Day in Michigan

Posted: Updated:

"IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT, FIRST OF ALL BECAUSE I SEE ALL THESE LITLE KIDS AND THEY'RE TRYING SOMETHING NEW AND WE'RE WORKING AS A TEAM."

"JUST SEEING EVERYBODY SO ENTHUSIASTIC , IT'S NICE MAKING NEW FRIENDS."

TEN YEAR OLD BRYAN ALSO LOVES TO BE THERE BECAUSE "IT MEANS JUST HANGING OUT WITH MY FRIENDS."

FIVE YEAR OLD OMAR IS ONE OF THE YOUNGEST PLAYERS OUT HERE ON THE ICE AND WHILE HE DOESN'T SAY MUCH, HIS SMILE TELLS THE STORY.

THE STATE OF MICHIGAN HAS MORE THAN 63-THOUSAND REGISTERED PLAYERS, OFFICIALS AND COACHES, WHICH IS THE SECOND MOST OF ANY STATE IN THE COUNTRY. BUT THROUGH HOCKEY DAY IN MICHIGAN THEY'RE ABLE TO EXPOSE MORE PLAYERS TO THE GAME OF HOCKEY AND THE FUN THAT IT BRINGS.

"I LOVE HOCKEY, GREW UP PLAYING HOCKEY I GREW UP PLAYING HOCKEY AT BELLE ISLE ON THE PONDS" SAYS VOLUNTEER COACH GLENN ROJO.

"IT'S JUST GREAT TO SEE THESE KIDS, THEIR FACES, THEY LIGHT UP."

CITLALLY VILLAGOMEZ IS JUST NINE YEARS OLD AND HAS ALREADY LEARNED A LOT OF NEW SKILLS SINCE SHE STARTED SKATING AT CLARK PARK, "I LEARNED HOW TO SKATE BACKWARDS AND SKATE ON ONE FOOT."

82 YEAR OLD ZIGGY GONZALEZ HAS BEEN SKATING FOR MOST OF HIS LIFE, BUT HIS PASSION FOR THE GAME KEEPS HIM YOUNG AND FUELS HIS DESIRE TO PASS ON THE GAME TO THE KIDS IN THIS MOSTLY HISPANIC NEIGHBORHOOD.

GONZALEZ WHO BOUGHT HIS FIRST PAIR OF SKATES FOR JUST 50 CENTS SAID "THEY CALL THIS HOCKEYTOWN AND I WOULD CALL THIS HOCKEY AREA HERE BECAUSE THE REST OF DETROIT ISN'T LIKE THIS PART OF DETROIT ABOUT HOCKEY."

"WE'RE MOSTLY HISPANIC IN THIS SECTION, BUT THEY STILL HAVE A GREAT LOVE FOR HOCKEY IN THIS PART OF DETROIT AND THAT'S WHY THIS RINK IS STILL OPEN."

ANOTHER TEN YEAR GIRL NAMED ANDREA SAYS "WHO EVER PLAYS HERE OR SOMEWHERE ELSE LIKE HOCKEY OR IF THEY HAVE AN ICE SKATING PARK, THEY COULD ICE SKATE THERE AND PLAY HOCKEY WITH THEIR FRIENDS."
