Elderly cancer survivor’s home refurbished by volunteers

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Breezy Point residents are still rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy but on Saturday, hundreds of volunteers with "operation Blessing" and Habitat for Humanity helped refurbish and clean homes.

The volunteers have also restored two community centers and a local business.

The refurbishing of homes was organized by Bank of America.

78-year-old Barbara Joyce, a cancer survivor who has lived in Breezy Point all her life, had her home destroyed by the storm. Insurance wouldn't cover all of the repair costs so the works refurbished her home for free.

About 100 volunteers spent hours cleaning, painting and refurbishing Barbara Joyce's bungalow. The repair work cost about $40,000.

Joyce has lived in hotels and at friends' homes since the storm.
