PD: Body found in Phoenix canal

Posted: Updated:

Residents of a valley neighborhood spotted a body floating in a canal near 36th Street and Camelback Road Sunday morning.

At this point in the investigation, Phoenix Police aren't able to say if this is a murder, a suicide or an accident.

They can't say for certain if the body discovered is that of a man or a woman.

The path along the canal that runs parallel to Camelback Road is a popular spot for an outdoor workout.

Sunday morning the portion from 40th Street to 32nd Street on the south side was closed.

"As soon as we had come around the corner, the police were putting up the caution tape and I couldn't get through," said Craig Lerfald, a witness.

"I could see it, you could see something sticking out of the water. You really couldn't tell exactly what it was," said Holly Vana, a witness.

Phoenix Police were called to the scene about 9:20 am by area residents walking by.

Paulina Elder spoke with them minutes later.

"They just say that they saw the body, she could tell it was somebody because she could see his or her feet," said Elder.

A tow truck and divers were brought in to remove what investigators quickly confirmed was a human body.

"Don't have a gender, don't have an age, it had been in there for quite a while as you can tell by the state of it there was a lot of dirt and stuff like that on it. So, they put that body into a bag and then lifted it out of the canal to preserve as much evidence as possible," said Lt. Stan Hoover, with Phoenix Police.

Hoover says it's too soon to tell if foul play was involved, it's possible the body drifted from 56th Street and Camelback.

But for people who live in the area, like Elder, this is one discovery that sits too close to home.

"I run on this canal every other day and it is scary, it is a concern, it is my neighborhood and it's just--it's scary," said Elder.

Police say the body was fully clothed in baggy clothes, including a hooded sweatshirt.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Phoenix Police Department.
