A mother is pained beyond words. Her three-year-old daughter was killed in a crash Sunday on Detroit's west side less than a block from her house. The chaotic scene was visible from her front door.
The child was one of six people reportedly coming home from church in a silver Chrysler Sebring. The driver was her 21-year-old next door neighbor.
"The fact that there may not have been a child seat could've been a reason for the injuries of at least one," said Scott Sheets with the Detroit Police Department.
Police confirmed one of the children was not in a car seat and was instead sitting in the front passenger's lap.
A nine-month-old baby boy that police believe was strapped into a car seat was rushed to the hospital along with the driver, a 19-year-old passenger and a 14-year-old girl and eleven-year-old boy that were both in the back seat.
"He was going pretty fast. When he hit Curtis, his wheels [were] off the ground, and I guess he just lost control," said Damon Mailey.
Police said the Sebring hit a parked car at more than 80 miles an hour, so hard the parked car was pushed back more than a hundred feet. The 21-year-old, who police said was just issued his license one month ago, then lost control. The car veered right and hit a tree, spun out again and landed in a yard. Doctors said his ribs were broken on impact, and marijuana could be a factor.
The driver could now be charged with second-degree murder for the death of the three-year-old and child abuse for endangering the rest of the kids in his car.
