Drivers will notice higher gas prices if they fill up Monday. They've taken a sharp rise in the past month.
Gas Buddy.com reports the average price of gas in Chicago is $4.10. The average price has risen nearly $0.12 per gallon in the last week.
According to AAA, one gallon of unleaded will set city residents back anywhere from $4.19 up to $4.49 per gallon. In some the suburbs, the price is hovering around $4 a gallon.
A gallon of premium at the Marathon station on Jefferson St. in the South Loop is $4.95 and customers were commiserating at the pump Monday morning.
At that price, motorists told FOX 32 News that their spending habits will have to change. Gas customers said they plan to spend less on entertainment and make fewer trips.
Gas prices hit historic highs nationally for the month of February as well.
A gallon of regular unleaded is selling at $3.71 nationally. That's more than $0.40 higher than one month ago. Monday's price is $0.51 higher than this day one year ago.
Analysts say it's due to a combination of things, refineries switching to summer blends, shutting down for maintenance and the high demand for oil. This means supplies are lower. The price of crude is up 10%.
